The Lord of the Rings has been around for a lot longer time than many people realize, and it was not always as massively popular as it is today – I had to order my copies (hardbacks only) from a very bemused shop assistant.  It was actually broadcast as a play on the BBC’s very highbrow Third Programme – (now Radio Three) – as long ago as 1956.  As they say, not a lot of people know that.
